Menemsha Quilt

by Amy on January 7, 2010

This sunny quilt was made to welcome a new baby into the world and was born of multiple inspirations.

I guess it’s plain from the photo that I gravitate towards these colors. Those four pitchers are favorites among my collection. And I guess you can also see that my walls are painted yellow.

I started the construction of the blocks after returning from our summer vacation in August. It’s hard not to be inspired by the light and the colors on Martha’s Vineyard.

Our favorite way to spend the evenings there is to watch the sunset over Menemsha Bay.

I hope Baby Miles spends many sunny moments wrapped in it’s colors.

I really love this. I know I say this about all of your quilts, but it’s true. I especially love the quilting – totally communicates the sunset.

I’m totally losing my shit right now. I’m a mess of tears and…a million other hormonally fueled and lovely emotions. It’s so beautiful. In fact, until I got to the end I was thinking what a lucky baby to get wrapped in something so lovely. And your inspiration is just breathtaking. No kidding, Amy, I’m speechless with gratitude and awe. I can’t wait to take a picture of him snuggled in something so gorgeous and made with so much love. You are amazing, truly amazing.
Yours,
Steph

Beautiful quilt and thanks so much for the Martha’s Vineyard pictures–I feel like I just had a teeny vacation!

Jill January 7, 2010 at 7:28 pm

So beautiful. I loved the quilting before I even read your story, and now, it all just sings. It’s so lovely that you made it for a special little baby too. See, with the time saved on food prep (aren’t chicken nuggets easy?) you can pursue more rewarding projects.

I love the quilt–and isn’t Menemsha just magical? I knitted a blanket for my mom over the summer that I called Menemsha Sunset–she had come joined us on our vacation there. Makes me yearn for lobster and wine…and sand and sunsets!

I saw this on Flikr first and had to dash rightover. Such beautiful colours1 So lovely.
I’m on the summer holidays at the moment so quite a bit of quilting is being done. The holidays seem to be the only times I get the time and space to quilt in.

This is so beautiful – I love the combination of colors… I really do. And as I’m struggling with finding the right golden yellow for my hallway (already tried two shades…) can you tell me the color of the paint on your wall behind the quilt??

Di January 7, 2010 at 9:59 pm

It’s beautiful. I love how the quilting is like one of the classic japanese designs and at the same time like a sun setting.
Happy new year to you.

I love the way you showed your color choices for the quilt against the photos of your vacation. It encourages me to look more closely to what’s around me for inspiration. Thanks for that.

A perfectly lovely quilt – with perfectly wonderful colors. I’m sorry about the health scare – I hope that your father is doing better.

tara thayer January 9, 2010 at 12:05 am

i love the way you tie the quilt shapes and colors in with the martha’s vineyard photos. as if we needed proof that your quilts are works of art, that is it. like abstract paintings.

Laura January 9, 2010 at 3:39 am

Is it weird that I’m really pleased that even though I may never see this quilt in person that it at least lives in my town now? :) Hope not. It is gorgeous!
