Lighting the Lights

December 18, 2009

menorah7

I light the candles for the generations gone
the blessings tie me to them.

I feel their blood in my veins.

I am a child in my parents’ home. Protected.

I understand the tradition
It’s who I am.

I give it to mine and hope they feel
safe.

When I was young I learned the rituals and practiced them because I should.

I do it now because I must.

I ache for the past and pray for the future.

I sing the blessings and light the candles

and I belong.

Thank you for these beautiful thoughts and images. I will share them with my son, who has always been very drawn to the meaning and celebration of Hanukkah, even though we’re not a Jewish family.

To know where your going, you have to remember the past. I think you said it so beautifully. Happy Hanunkah to you and your family.

I wish I had an editing option. What I meant to say was
I do it now because I must. That was my favorite line.

really beautiful. i showed my son your picture of the candles last night. we had been listening to hanukah stories on npr last weekend, and there was a story involving menorahs (go figure) and my son asked me what a menorah was. thank you for assisting me in the education of my little guy.

How universally beautiful. Thank you for putting me in a holiday mood – and a mood of tradition. Love.
