De Facto

by Amy on October 26, 2009

There were lots of you who liked the idea of participating in a blog-ring of sorts where we pledge to show more of our real-life on our blogs. So I give you: Moments. If you’d like to participate, here are the guidelines: try and be as authentic as you can. You don’t have to post photos of your messy house or tell us your most embarrassing moment (unless you want to). I’m just asking that you keep reality in your mind when you post. That’s it. Feel free to send me your link if you haven’t already and I’ll add you.

Here’s my entry for today.

I’m feeling a little vulnerable about the sharing so go easy on me. (If you look closely you’ll see, Spongebob and Elmo on the floor, My copy of Portland Through the Lens, a hat on the knitting needles, a big-boy computer and a little-boy computer, my reading glasses and Ginger-the-Cat’s hind leg.)

Now, onto what you really want (even if you don’t know it yet). The recipe for the cookies in the picture. Do yourself a favor, make these cookies. These are the chewiest spiciest ginger-iest mollasses-iest butter-y most delicious cookies. Ever. The recipe was shared with me a few years ago by my friend Heather (who is famous in certain circles for said cookies) and since then they have become the epitome of fall baking in our house.

Let me give you a little background about the cookie-eating-habits of my family. It’s all chocolate chip all the time around here. I make something else, they ask where the chocolate chips are. I stray from my usual recipe, they ask why I bothered. Three nights a week, without fail, Sean (Jake’s father) comes over for one reason or another and walks directly to the cookie jar. If there are no chocolate chip cookies in the jar he emerges from the kitchen with a sad puppy look on his face and goes about his business all pouty-like. When he finds cookies, it’s a different story entirely. The problem here is that I’m not as big a fan of the chocolate chip as they are. I like them fine on occasion, but my heart belongs to the oatmeal raisin. But I digress. The point is that even with all that chocolate chip love, they give it a rest for a while when it’s ginger molasses season. Even Sean.

Here’s the recipe. A few notes: this recipe makes a lot of cookies but don’t bother halving it, you’ll eat them all. Or give some to your neighbors—they’ll take in your trash cans for a year. There’s lots of butter in these cookies. Don’t skimp or substitute. I promise, you won’t regret it. That’s it. Now go make them—you can thank me later.

I love your coffee table! Nice try, but it still looks pretty good. ;-)

Will have to make those cookies, though my waistline will regret it.

be well, Jill

elizabeth of course October 26, 2009 at 11:35 pm

Oh I am making those tomorrow for sure! And I’m with you on the chocolate chippies. What’s the appeal? My husband always wants them above others. ???

ps – that room looks good to me.

Stephanie October 26, 2009 at 11:39 pm

Your photo makes me feel at home, well minus the cookies. None of those yummies here, maybe I should make some!

So will you have a particular day that you will post "moments"? Or will this be more of a daily posting?

jessica October 26, 2009 at 11:44 pm

I just made a batch of chocolate chip cookies that completely flopped (a post for "moments" – yes!) but now I really want to try those ginger cookies. I always crave them this time of year. I’m writing my post now…it all seems so liberating!

Kathleen October 26, 2009 at 11:52 pm

I am so with you on oatmeal raisin, but my crew insists on chocolate chip too… maybe the molasses cookies will convert them?
Thanks for Moments. It’s perfect.

kate October 27, 2009 at 12:28 am

As soon as Alfie recovers…those cookies will be made – I LOVE ginger cookies x

Jodi (The Jolly Bee) October 27, 2009 at 1:20 am

I would love to participate in your "Moments" blog-circle. There’s never enough time in my day to do all that I want, but I try to do one thing — just for me — each day (even if it’s just taking goofy pictures of my fluffy dog). It’s good to know others out there are dealing with the realities of each day….the laundry, the kids, real work, housework, etc. Boy, life is a real balancing act — and sometimes mine’s a little off-kilter. Count me in!

those cookies sound divine! Just put molasses on my shopping list for tomorrow. :)

I’m going to try uncropping my pics…… :)

ok, i really want to start blogging, i am having LOTS of moments these days, mostly not-so-pretty ones and i feel like sharing will help release some of this yuckiness, perhaps. the trouble is, i don’t even know how to start, so i am going to have to enlist some help in creating my own blog. but for today, i will just say right here how incredibly sad i am that my 11 year old son is on a lying spree. and i don’t know why he continues, he is a lousy liar and gets busted every time (…i think…). and he is lying about really stupid shit, which i just don’t get. son’t get me wrong though, i would be even more upset if he was lying about more serious stuff. i lied as a kid, maybe that is why this is so upsetting to me. maybe those cookies will make it all better, i’ll try that. i hope that my lack of proper punctuation does not get me a failing grade.

I like the title!

I am not sure your coffee table counts, especially since your cookies look delicious. I need to take pictures of the pumpkin bread we made today that came out more like a pumpkin brick. I was very disappointed.

Amy October 27, 2009 at 1:17 pm

I am an oatmeal fan too – I am embarrassed to admit that my favorites are the ones made by Subway – yeah, that Subway.

Oh & my post yesterday is about as honest as it gets… :o )

jenn October 27, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Yum! I want to try these for sure! I believe I have molasses hanging out from the last holiday season… still good??
Pleas add me to your list, I promise to try to be authentic!!

Rosa October 27, 2009 at 2:06 pm

I’m interested in joining too. I tried to press on the contact me button and couldn’t get anything.

I spent the weekend reviewing old shelter mags so that I can discard them in recyclables. I was starting to get major depressed because, for as much as I strive for cleanliness or orderliness, it isn’t happening in a home of 5 people.

Thanks for showing and sharing that we can have a productive and lovely home life without the magazine cover look.

Alexis October 27, 2009 at 3:22 pm

As soon as my gallbladder is out, I’m making those!

I want to join in too–did I already say that? I’ll have a post up later today.

kristina October 27, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Yes indeedy, I will be making these cookies! K x

Amy - parkcitygirl October 27, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Yummy! Your space looks better than mine :) I’ve been binge cleaning today, but not where the kids play.

heather jane October 28, 2009 at 12:01 am

I love oatmeal anything, too. I think it’s the texture. My friend recently posted a recipe for pumpkin, oatmeal, chocolate chip cookies. For the love of Pete! Why have I not made any cookies yet this fall?

My life is so full of "real" right now that I can’t even take the time to post about it. Where would I start?!

randi October 28, 2009 at 1:47 pm

This is a great post! Although I use my blog to post the "good" things in my life, there are lots of not-so-perfect things in each of my days. This sounds like a good way to even those things out. Lovely!

CambriaW October 28, 2009 at 3:19 pm

Thanks very much for posting some reality. I too feel the pressure, and therefore often feel a sense of failure that my boys don’t wear hand-knit everything, eat home-made everything, and live in a picture-perfect home. Nothing made my self-esteem rise as quickly as when some of my favorite blog-goddesses admitted that their laundry had been piling to the ceiling, their family had been eating sandwiches and take-out, and the dishes were threatening to take over the kitchen. I thought they somehow managed to turn out lovely patterns, run etsy shops, and garden all while maintaining the perfect home. The pressure is off now, and I feel exponentially better about myself.

Now, I’m off to bake your cookies, get my dishes done, work on my school-work, and knit a sock :)

I’d like to join in the Moments. I too get down on all the perfection when I look at my place, where’d I’d rather have fun with my daughter then have a perfectly clean oven.

Laura October 30, 2009 at 2:37 am

OK, number one: I think I may have to make those cookies as *soon* as I have a kitchen to cook in again. And number two: Moments. Yes.

henny October 30, 2009 at 5:20 am

Love your natural down to earth post!
I join this lovely MOMENT blog.

Hi — I would love to be added to your list of Moments blogs. I am often intimidated by the perfect looking creative blogs I come across… I love the inspiration, but I can’t help but think "I’m doing it wrong!"

If you’d like to link me — I’d be honored.

I am so excited – I love, love, love, loooove ginger-molasses cookies and cannot wait to bake these tomorrow. I spent last weekend gorging myself on the yummiest g-m cookies at a bakery called Waves of Grain on the Oregon Coast and have been craving them ever since I came home. This will help. I hope.

I really like your idea for you ‘moments’ series. While I don’t blog, I’ll try to mentally participate which should help my practice of staying present. Thanks for the inspiration and the recipe!

amandajean November 2, 2009 at 5:33 pm

i baked your cookies over the weekend. they were a big hit! i shared them with 3 families, too and we still had plenty leftover for us. thanks for sharing the recipe. it’s going to go into regular rotation at our house. :)

Dana November 4, 2009 at 11:47 am

I agree with you on the chocolate chip cookies. I only like them steaming hot, slighlty gooey out of the oven, after that you can have them all. Baking ginger Molasses cookies, mmmm, with a pint of Guiness, is the best afternoon spent.

Erin D. November 4, 2009 at 1:41 pm

I love this idea! I’m participating here:

I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone’s "slices of life."

Elissa November 4, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Thank you for sharing the recipe! I’m going to try it out today! And I really appreciate your struggle to be authentic on your blog… that is something I continually wrestle with too…
