Distracted

by Amy on August 11, 2009

That’s not a finished object you say—it has no binding. Well, yes, technically that’s true. But try telling him that.

There’s nothing complicated about this quilt. It’s sixteen-inch squares set four across by four down. It’s my plan to use this on the beach next week when we take our vacation. I wanted to quilt it densely for durability and I thought whimsical might be fun, but after a little while of quilting like this:

I surrendered and went with something a little less labor (and thread) intensive.

So it looks kind of ridiculous with two totally different quilting styles that just change at random but I plan to ignore it.

And instead of binding it I decided to work on something else.

And when I need a break from that, I work on this

I’ve heard it said that ADD can add to creativity. Let’s go with that.

My girls are still using quilts that need binding on them. They mention it every once in awhile – and I’m sure, eventually, the binding will get put on. I love that labor intensive quilting – but I do understand getting tired of doing it.

I’ve finally figured out that if I can’t go from project to project, I will never get anything done. I need some variation. I do have to limit myself, and decide to finish certain projects, but if I only work on one thing, I get too burned out.

I like to move from project to project too. In fact, I always feel most inspired to make something while i am in the middle of a project. A little frustrating, yes, but fun!

Love your quilts!

I tend to have more than one project going at a time, and material for two to three more. If I am almost finished with one and don’t have another waiting, it drives me nuts. Sometimes I need the one waiting to make myself actually finish the one I am working on…especially if I am doing the quilting part by hand.

Audrie August 11, 2009 at 3:28 am

I think it’s healthy to have more than one project going at a time… I always go, especially when it comes to knitting.

sarah jackson August 11, 2009 at 3:56 am

I have to move around from project to project or I just get bored and lose steam.

Tomorrow my project is making sense of my craft room because it is a disaster. That would be the downside of the ADD crafting. :)

my mother-in-law just told me that that is how creative minds work, they have to have multiple projects on the go at one time… it helps with creativity!

it works for me as long as i come back to the first one and finish it… that sometimes is the tricky part.

Paige August 11, 2009 at 4:45 am

I’m forever moving from one project to another…pick up the knitting, put it down, flip through some magazines for inspiration, scribble with the little one for awhile, etc. There’s so much inspiration to be had out there, I just don’t wanna miss out on any of it!
Superb quilt, btw. Lovely.

The machine quilting looks nice. Did you use variegated thread?

Rachel- 2ndavestudio August 11, 2009 at 4:49 am

I love to have different styles of quilting on a quilt! I do it all the time…
I love that simple 16" block! im thnking I may need one of those.
Love it.
Im starting my round about soon, seriously I am! stop laughing! I am! My step daughters Xmas present.
thanks ofr sharing your days!

This is the first time I will admit this…but I currently have a quilt on my bed that I cover up with every night that only has about 1/3 of the binding stitched down to the back..maybe less than that. Even better… I’ve washed it twice. I should probably finish stitching it down soon.

Gee – you have a lot of crafting on your plate! What beautiful quits you have made and such perfect free motion!!

Are you self taught? Haven’t managed to try it yet…slightly nervous!!

V August 11, 2009 at 11:01 am

what? you only have three going on at once? sigh.
;-)
welcome to the club! Have a nice vacation! the quilt will be fabulous and hold all your holiday memories!

amy August 11, 2009 at 12:00 pm

What beautiful quilts! I’m glad that you have 3 going on at once! I thought I was the only one who did stuff like that! Now I see I’m in good company.

jessica August 11, 2009 at 2:03 pm

There may be a quilt here with two different designs on it because one was too tricky….. I have a whole bunch of half finished projects hanging out here. My goals is to finish them up (like my Christmas socks from last year!!!)

Rosa August 11, 2009 at 2:13 pm

I’ve been wanting to quilt with randome circles for a while, but fear the thread usage because of my budget crafting policy. It looks lovely. I hope that you can sneak in the binding. You do amazing work.

allison August 11, 2009 at 2:15 pm

It looks beautiful none the less. That baby is right, binding is an optional extra! :)

Cindy August 11, 2009 at 2:35 pm

I love both patterns, especially the circles, who cares if it matches, its cool.

Great plan! I love the simplicity of your big squares, apparently Q does too :) Cute pic

Rebekah August 11, 2009 at 8:28 pm

Beautiful quilting! Crafting ADD is the best…you get to work on what you want without getting burned out and have a handful of projects to show for it at the end :)

julia August 11, 2009 at 8:57 pm

ADD or not, it’s beautiful. The two different quilting styles go very well with the notion of ‘quilting’ for me. We use different fabrics, sometimes old, sometimes new, to make something new. Many different structures and colors and histories combine in a quilt, so circles and circly lines will just add up to another historical quilt (whew, that was a difficult birth of word and phrase).

There’s a strong possibility I will be losing my job by the end of Oct because the clinic is closing. It’s such a blessing because now I will have time and mental/emotional capacity to blog and photograph the way I really want to. What you got goin’ on is so inspiring.

On another note. I’m creating a new collection for a gallery in Nov. I really want to give you a piece of your choosing in exchange for your beautiful quilting work. Of course, it will be for the new baby, but I’m sure I’ll be stealing it for myself more often than not. Baby is due 1/1/10…perfect time to cozy up :)

Carly August 12, 2009 at 9:49 pm

I am very very guilty of keeping multiple works-in-progress OR very very gifted in dividing my inspiration to many needy projects at once! And oh, my, how I am admiring that beautiful quilt top you’ve got coming with the wonky squares…….. It gives me joy.

PS. I can’t free motion quilt to save my life – mine are all straight lines so I envy any use of circles, loops and squiggles no matter how incongruous you believe them to be – just decide to love it!

Theresa August 12, 2009 at 11:28 pm

I believe you have to pick your moment. Sometimes there’s not enough time in the day to start quilting so you have to cut out instead. Then other times you don’t have enough time to cut out so you pick up a craft magazine and this inspires for the next project. I’d say you’re perfectly within your rights to have more than one activity on at any given time! They’re both lovely too. T

Caroline August 13, 2009 at 2:36 pm

The quilts look amazing! Have fun on your beach vacation!!

amylouwho August 13, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Love it! I must have ADD too. I’ve got a lot of little things going on right now. But I think I posted about that already.

I love the simplicity of that cute fun beach quilt!

darlene August 14, 2009 at 2:22 pm

love your projects and the fun factor in them, even your denial about quilting styles changing is great! looks great for the beach and life!

monica August 16, 2009 at 11:05 am

all your projects looks amazing!

Anna of Helylle August 16, 2009 at 3:46 pm

The weather won’t really matter at all when you’ve got a beach quilt like that. Well done, it’s magical!

Pikku-Kettu August 17, 2009 at 5:13 am

ADD as a creativity enhancer totally works. :)

I love the elephant fabric you used in the quilt!

amandajean August 19, 2009 at 4:19 pm

i love the qulit with large blocks of fabric. it’s so fun! and who cares if it has two different kinds of quilting on it. i love it!

and the last shot of your work in progress quilt is just stunning! i love that, too.

Raphiel August 23, 2009 at 5:38 am

I’m with ya sister! ADD … if the idea hits ya, you have to go with it.. sometimes it will have nothing to do with what you’ve been working on for hours and all of a sudden… " hey, what if I did this with that" with something completely unrelated … happens to me all the time.
Love your blog :)
