This is my favorite scarf.

I loved knitting it. I love the pattern. I love the yarn. I love the luxurious color and I love how it feels on my neck. I love the first day cool enough to wear it.
This is a new scarf.
I just finished it this week. It was a fun pattern and it’s always satisfying to use scraps from my stash. I’m going to throw it in the rotation as the weather continues to turn and see if it earns a place of honor. Something about it isn’t speaking to me though. We’ll see.
In the spirit of the frost being on the proverbial pumpkin (do James Taylor lyrics count as proverbs?) and the wool scarves wrapping up our necks, I’ve also got soup simmering on the stove as I write this post. I’m getting a jump on Jessica’s Soup Swap which is set to start on Monday. I’ll be posting photos and the recipe then, but I’ll give you some hints. It’s my mother’s recipe and it involves beans, barley and flanken. If you don’t know what flanken is, then you probably didn’t grow up in a Jewish household. You’re in for a treat!
My question for today: If I were to give up television all together (in order to set an example for my boys), would that include Jon Stewart as well, or could an exception be made for his show?

I have no idea what flanken is but I’m looking forward to finding out! I love that scarf you made…I’m relishing the last day(s) of summer out here working on a grad project…at least I’m enjoying the sun while writing a paper!
I love scarves! I’m working on a crocheted one now that I saw on sewtakeahike. I plan on posting it soon – well, when it’s finished that is.
I love soup too!
And I love giving up TV!
what a great post.
We gave up cable 6 months ago – great decision. We live off netflix and the shows we really want to watch we get online (just 2 – the Office and LOST). So I say you can keep Jon. He’s a hoot!
I keep toying with giving up TV, but I have to wait for the end of baseball season. You can get Jon Stewart on iTunes and watch it on your computer so you’re not *technically* watching TV. Anyway, I consider Jon Stewart to be news, so I wouldn’t count it anyway!
I’m going to make soup, too. for Jessica’s Soup Swap, but I haven’t decided what to make yet. Maybe I’ll see what’s at the farmer’s market tomorrow…
This week is our week for coffee! I’m free between 9:30 and 11:30 every day–what’s good for you?
I just want to say Hi and I really love your blog…I came over here from Jessica. You know when you visit a blog for the first time and sometimes you can tell without even reading anything, just the feel, that its one your are going to “bookmark”, well that is what I did when I landed here. Good vibes:) I’ll be back.
The scarf is lovely! Perfect for a cool day!
We gave up TV recently and I still think it was a good thig. A few years ago, when we last gave up tv, when we were childless, when ER was still good, we made a weekly trip to see some friends and watch ER at their place. If you need too, I say keep one program, but make it an event.
I don’t think Jon Stewart counts. We went without cable for a month and that was enough for me. I’m weak.
However, I love love love the scarves. I do not know this cold weather of which you speak, but I will trust you that it exists. Scarves in my neck of the woods are purely decorative, and those are both gorgeous.
I love that scarf too!!! that is really lovely. And it’s funny how soup weather is setting in and everyone’s thinking the same way…! have a good week!
Beautiful scarf!
We don’t have a TV and I watch Jon on the computer and that is not a TV. Really. It LOOKS like you’re watching TV but it’s really something else…
Oh, I just want to run write out and make me a scarf EXACTLY like this one! It is beautiful and looks so cozy and soft. And a soup exchange? Oh, I love fall!
I can see why you love your scarf. What’s not to love when your knitting and wearing Malabrigo?? I really like your new scarf, too. What a great way to use up all those scraps…See you at the Soup Swap!
Now that is what I call a knitting pattern! How did you ever manage to stay focused enough to follow it? I think if I ever attempt it I’ll need to print a picture of yours to keep me motivated and focused. Lovely new scarf too. What did you line it with? And what is this about a soup swap?! I’ll have to check it out…
Hello! I am in the SewConnected group and just had to comment on that scarf. I am constantly reminded how the internet makes the world much more accessible to us. The woman who designed that scarf, firebrunette, is my best friend! And I agree with you, the one I made is my most used scarf by far.
Your scarf looks great – but I see the allure of the hand knit one too! Hope you get to start wearing them soon
